Butler University School of Music presents a pair of concerts celebrating the art songs and song cycles of composer Michael Scherperel. A Guest Artist Recital on Sunday, January 27th features Butler artists Kirsten Gunlogson and Dana Zenobi with guests Chloe Boelter and Susan Boardman, joined by violinist Tricia Bonner and flautist Julia Mattern along with composer-pianist Scherperel, including songs to texts by John Donne, Hermann Melville and others as well as the premiere of a quartet to a poem of Louisa May Alcott. A Duckwall Artist Series Recital on Tuesday, January 29th with Butler artists baritone Oliver Worthington, clarinet Trina Gross, and trumpet Allen Miller, includes guests Patrick Lord-Remmert, DavidMichael Schuster, and cellist John Mattern along with pianist Scherperel. In addition to the premiere of a trio to a poem by Auschwitz survivor Serge Smulevic, the recital also contains songs to poetry by Mattie Stepanek, Michael Scherperel, and Geoffrey Chaucer (the latter sung in Middle English), and will conclude with a surprising bit of humor in Scherperel’s comic song, “Up for #1”.
