The Irwin Library Film Series enters its 4th year with a new theme: The 2000s! We're guessing most Butler undergrads were born in this decade, and we assume your memories of it are limited to watching The Backyardigans or a certain young English wizard. Since we know you've all seen Mean Girls 15 times already, the Librarians have curated a selection of important films from the first decade of our young century which you might not have already encountered. Each month we'll host a Wednesday night showing in the Irwin Library Instruction Lab, with popcorn and soda available, as well as BCR credit (we'll have a post-film discussion of cinematic and cultural themes to make your experience worthwhile). Get ready for flip phones, iPods, and George W. Bush references, as Butler Libraries takes you back to the 2000s!
Wednesday, September 16 at 7:30 PM: Michael Clayton (2007), directed by Tony Gilroy and starring George Clooney
In the mid-2000s, 'Andor' showrunner Tony Gilroy was known as a top screenwriter, but took on the director's chair for the first time with the legal thriller Michael Clayton. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, to call it simply a legal thriller or personal drama would sell it short. George Clooney plays a fixer for a huge law firm which is currently involved with defending another huge corporation facing a class action suit for poisoning farmers. Questions of power, justice, and corporate greed run side by side with the title character's personal issues, and the limits of loyalty - to his employer, its attorneys, and their clients. Gilroy's rewarding script, taut direction, and unforgettable performances by Clooney, Tilda Swinton, and Tom Wilkinson add up to the kind of character-driven genre film Hollywood just doesn't make anymore.
