Mon Oncle ("My Uncle") was Jacques Tati's biggest international hit, and the best entry to his work. His trademark character Monsieur Hulot (introduced in 1953's "M. Hulot's Holiday") is a bumbling fish out of water across all of Tati's films, but Mon Oncle specifically sets him against his biggest enemy: modern ways and new inventions. While easily read as a satire of automation, gadgetry and consumer society, the film is truly an exploration of Tati's humanism, as Hulot's struggles with his environment are viewed through the appreciative and amused eyes of his young nephew. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Mon Oncle is a thoughtful and yet hilarious film centered around Tati's genius visual and physical comedy.
