Neighborhood Concert Series: Wind Ensemble
The Butler University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Professor Michael Colburn, begins its concert season with a varied and exciting program of works for winds, brass, and percussion. The highlight of the program is the world premiere of a new selection by Butler composer Frank Felice, featuring soloist Mark Ortwein, bassoonist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Entitled “Ecstatic Cling,” the work employs a number of unique electronic filters and devices that allow the soloist to explore a world of sound that is usually the playground of rock and roll guitarists! We continue to celebrate the centenary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth with the inclusion of his delightfully quirky Divertimento, a work originally written for orchestra and artfully transcribed for band by Clare Grundman. The program will also feature the Butler conducting debut of one of our newest faculty members, Dr. Brian Weidner, who will lead the wind ensemble through Timothy Mahr’s “Fantasia in G.” The program will be rounded out by classic works from two prolific band composers, Vincent Persichetti and Robert Russell Bennett.
This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
