[description] =>
This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.

Recipient of a 2016 MacArthur Fellowship, Claudia Rankine is the author of five collections of poetry, including Citizen: An American Lyric (2014) and Don’t Let Me Be Lonely (2004), and several plays, including her first published one, The White Card, forthcoming from Graywolf Press in 2019.

She is the editor of several anthologies, including The Racial Imaginary: Writers on Race in the Life of the Mind(2015). She also co-produces a video series, The Situation, alongside John Lucas, and is the founder of the Open Letter Project: Race and the Creative Imagination.

Rankine’s bestselling book Citizen: An American Lyric uses poetry, essay, cultural criticism, and visual images to explore what it means to be an American citizen in an ostensibly “post-racial” society. A defining text for our time, Citizen was the winner of the 2015 Forward Prize for Best Collection, the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry (it was also a finalist in the criticism category, making it the first book in the award’s history to be a double nominee), the NAACP Image Award, the PEN Open Book Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Award for poetry.

[description] =>
This Butler University Wind Ensemble program more than lives up to its description “Something Old, Something New.” It doesn’t get much newer than Frank Ticheli’s "Serenade for Kristin", a 2018 work for solo oboe and chamber ensemble that will feature Butler’s own Pam Ajango. And it doesn’t get much older than Charles Catel’s "Overture in C," composed in 1792 for a French military band in the aftermath of the French Revolution. It is one of the few examples of a work from the classical era that was originally composed for an wind band that resembles the modern wind ensemble. The concert will also feature soloist Alec Larner, one of Butler’s Concerto Competition winners, who will perform Emma Lou Diemer’s "Concerto for Marimba in One Movement." The program also includes classic concert band favorites by Malcolm Arnold and Fisher Tull, as well as Alfred Reed’s beautiful setting of Joaquin Turina’s vivid "La Procession del Rocio."

[description] =>
Inspired by the words and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “We Shall Overcome” showcases repertoire from across the African American music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders with interwoven spoken word from Dr. King’s recorded speeches.

Producer and Musical Director Damien Sneed’s career covers an incredible breadth of genres. He has conducted and collaborated major original works for Wynton Marsalis, regularly accompanies Jessye Norman, collaborated with Lawrence Brownlee, and has toured extensively with Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and the Clark Sisters.

This production ties together a living lineage of music and culture that includes traditional gospel, modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway and spirituals. From Aretha Franklin, to Wynton Marsalis; Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder; Nina Simone to Donny Hathaway; and traditional spirituals and music from “the Wiz”, Damien’s unique understanding of each genre allows him to fluidly cover so much musical ground in a single performance. Composers include Duke Ellington, Damien Sneed, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Wynton Marsalis, and the songbooks of Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Donny Hathaway, Music from “The Wiz.”

Single tickets go on sale June 15 and can be purchased in person at the Clowes Memorial Hall Box Office, online at butlerartscenter.org, or through TicketMaster at ticketmaster.com or 800-982-2787.

The Butler Arts Center gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the Indiana Arts Commission (a State Agency), Arts Midwest, the National Endowment for the Arts (a Federal Agency), and Elements Financial.

[description] =>
Jo Koy has come a long way from his modest beginnings performing at a Las Vegas coffee house. As one of today’s premiere stand-up comedians, Koy sells-out theaters and arenas across the world with his infectious and explosive energy onstage. The comedian pulls inspiration from his family, specifically his son, with material that has universal appeal.

In November 2017, the comedian broke a record for the most tickets sold by a single artist at The Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu with 11 sold-out shows and over 23,000 tickets sold. Celebrating this accomplishment, the mayor’s office in Honolulu proclaimed November 24th as “Jo Koy Day.” Koy is also the only comedian to sell out 6 shows at The Warfield in San Francisco, he broke the attendance record at Club Regent Event Centre in Winnipeg with 4 sold-out shows, and is one of the few acts to sell-out 2 shows at The Florida Theatre in Jacksonville, FL. In July 2018, Koy was given the prestigious “Comedian Of The Year” award at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.

Today, the comedian tours around the world and is currently on his Break The Mold World Tour. He can be heard as a weekly guest on the popular podcast, The Adam Carolla Show. He also hosts the weekly podcast The Koy Pond with Jo Koy on Podcast One. Additionally, Koy can be seen on the Kevin Hart’s LaughOutLoud.com as the host of Inglorious Pranksters. For more info on the podcast and tour dates, please visit: Jokoy.com.

Later this year, Koy is confirmed to film his 2nd Netflix Original stand-up special at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, and will also be seen co-starring alongside Brandon Routh and Donna Murphy as “Vladimir Lenin” in the upcoming live-action film Anastasia. In 2005, Koy had the opportunity of a lifetime when he performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He became one of a select few comics to receive a standing ovation on the show. Since then, Koy has had two highly rated and successful comedy specials on Comedy Central, Don’t Make Him Angry and Lights Out . In 2017, Koy released his 3rd stand-up special, Jo Koy: Live from Seattle as a Netflix Original. Koy has appeared on over 140 episodes of Chelsea Lately as a season regular roundtable guest. Other appearances include: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, @Midnight with Chris Hardwick, Spike TV’s Adam Carolla & Friends Build Stuff Live, Celebrity Page TV, VH1, World’s Funniest Fails, Sean In The Wild, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Last Call with Carson Daly.

[description] =>
Black Violin is the blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B, and bluegrass music. Live, they are accompanied by their incredible band, featuring ace turntable whiz DJ SPS and a drummer. Named one of the hottest bands at SXSW in 2013, Black Violin was invited to perform at Bonnaroo and returned to SXSW this year to SRO crowds.

Their groundbreaking collaboration has seen them play their music for everybody from the troops in Iraq to both the official President’s Inaugural Ball and the Kids Inaugural in Washington, DC, where Barack Obama himself gave each a hearty hand-shake. Individually and together, Black Violin has collaborated with the likes of P. Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin and The Eagles

Single tickets go on sale June 15 and can be purchased in person at the Clowes Memorial Hall Box Office, online at butlerartscenter.org, or through TicketMaster at ticketmaster.com or 800-982-2787.

[description] =>
Algorithms to Live By

All our lives are constrained by limited space and time, limits that give rise to a particular set of problems. What should we do, or leave undone, in a day or a lifetime? How much messiness should we accept? What balance of new activities and familiar favorites is the most fulfilling? These may seem like uniquely human quandaries, but they are not: computers, too, face the same constraints, so computer scientists have been grappling with their versions of such problems for decades. And the solutions they've found have much to teach us. In this talk, I will discuss three problems that arise in the lives of both humans and computers — the explore/exploit tradeoff, caching, and predicting the future. Looking at the ways that computers solve these problems offers insights relevant to our day-to-day lives, and a different way of thinking about how we should make decisions, use our memories, and structure our environments.

Tom Griffiths is the Henry R. Luce Professor of Information Technology, Consciousness, and Culture at Princeton University. His research explores connections between human and machine learning, using ideas from statistics and artificial intelligence to understand how people solve the challenging computational problems they encounter in everyday life. In 2016, Tom and his friend and collaborator Brian Christian published "Algorithms to live by", introducing ideas from computer science and cognitive science to a general audience and illustrating how they can be applied to human decision-making. The book was named as one of the Amazon.com“Best Science Books of 2016,” the Forbes “Must-read brain books of 2016,” and the MIT Technology Review “Best books of 2016.”

This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.

[description] =>
Two worlds collide in this “breathtaking and exquisite” (The New York Times) musical, based on the 2015 Tony Award®-winning Lincoln Center Theater production. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, THE KING AND I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.”
Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. THE KING AND I is “too beautiful to miss” (New York Magazine).

[description] =>
Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy are Canada’s reigning couple of Celtic music, whose dazzling career achievements underpin an incomparable off-stage life.

Indeed, when two of the planet’s very best fiddle players married in 2002, the proverbial mantelpiece was instantly crammed with JUNO and East Coast Music Awards. Though MacMaster and Leahy followed different trajectories – she a Cape Breton native who could step-dance before she could walk; he the oldest brother of acclaimed family group Leahy – both had assuredly crested the traditional music peak.

[description] =>
