Join us Wednesday, March 19, 7:30 PM, in Irwin Library Instruction Lab for Run Lola Run, Starring Franke Potente, directed by Tom Tykwer
The Irwin Library Film Series returns for the 2024-2025 year with a new theme: Rewind to the 90s! Almost nobody had a cell phone, but we were dipping a toe in the internet, making mixtapes, and watching Friends and Seinfeld and this year’s assortment of films released and set in the 1990s. Join Butler Libraries faculty and our guest hosts as we examine the cinema of our youth and what it says about how we live today. Popcorn and soda will be available, as well as BCR credit!
German director Tom Tykwer’s experimental thriller was accused of simply extending fast-paced MTV-style editing into feature length, but there’s no denying its prescience 25 years later. With its pulsing techno soundtrack (by the director) and multiple story iterations, it was a high-energy indie hit, winning the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival and grossing $25 million on a $2 million budget. Sent against the backdrop of a recently re-unified Berlin, it’s also a signal of German culture moving past its difficult 20th century and racing into the 21st. Most of all, it’s an action-packed 81 minutes of lead actress Franke Potente racing against the clock to find the money and save her boyfriend.
